A search for a new owner looks to have failed, and now stocks appear to be being run down.

• Merseyside Police would like to reassure the public that it is working with partners to deliver the best police service possible to ensure the safety of our communities.

• The force will take every opportunity to deal robustly with any criminal or person that causes problems on our streets. A police operation is in place with an enhanced and robust police response to ensure that any disorder is swiftly and firmly dealt with. Perpetrators will be tracked down and placed before the courts.

• Merseyside Police officers are highly trained and experienced in dealing with public order incidents. Merseyside Police officers are trained and prepared to respond to incidents of disorder and will make use of that training and experience to identify and bring offenders to justice and protect local communities.

• We understand that last night’s disorder will have an impact on the wider community but we would like to reassure everyone that as well as the policing operation, your local neighbourhood teams will be patrolling your neighbourhood as usual and responding to calls from the community.

• We would like to make a plea to parents, guardians and carers to make sure children or young people are kept off the streets and are at home to avoid them getting involved in any disorder.

As a precaution to ensure the small minority of young people engaged in criminal activity do not have access to materials that can be used as missiles, we would like to ask:

Residents

• If you have a wheelie bin, please do not leave it visible at the front of your house. If possible, ensure it is out of view at the back. If you are expecting a collection, place your wheelie bin out in the morning of the collection only and not overnight.

• If you are having any building work done, ensure any equipment, building materials such as bricks or wood is securely put away.

• Please mention this advice to your neighbours.

• Ensure any lose materials are securely put away and that you lock your premises as securely as possible, using shutters or gates if they are installed.

Petrol Forecourts

• Please do not sell any containers or canisters of petrol to the public at this time.

While it is the decision of individual businesses whether they open, there is no intelligence to suggest a risk to businesses at present. However, during disturbances last night, a retail premise was targeted and businesses should therefore be mindful of the welfare of their staff:

• Please check your security and fire prevention measures.

• Set any intruder alarms

• Lock premises as securely as possible, using shutters or gates if they are installed

• Check batteries in smoke and fire alarms are functioning

• Ensure sprinkler systems are working effectively

• Check CCTV is in full working order

As far as I can gather, planning permission was applied for on the 4th of July, on the grounds of ‘dereliction’. Kevin Adderley, the council’s interim director of Corporate Services sent a reply on the 27th of July stating that prior approval was not required for the proposal under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.

Derelict? It was an appalling building – not a patch on the original Seacombe Ferry Hotel - and suffered from bad management (and a worse reputation). But the building was not derelict. Indeed, the ‘to let’ signs were still up as recently as Tuesday. Seacombe is the poorer for the loss of another potential money maker.

At this moment there are no plans in for its replacement, but as soon as they are, I’ll post them here.

The days when children receiving a free school meal would be singled out
are also long gone, and schools are not told about the individual
circumstances of children who receive free school meals.

Said Cllr Steve Foulkes, Leader of Wirral Council and Cabinet Member for
Finance and Best Value: ‘We think there are a lot of families out there
who may be eligible for free school meals for their children who either
aren’t claiming, or doubt they will be eligible. so don’t enquire in the
first place.

‘To try and address this, the Council has made the claims process very
simple – all you have to do is ring or email us. Everyone is feeling the
pinch at the moment, and the money you save could make a real
difference, and you have the peace of mind of knowing the children are
well-provided for during the school day,’ he added.

Cllr Ann McLachlan, Wirral’s Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and
Lifelong Learning, added: ‘We know that some parents are reluctant
because they feel their child may be ‘singled out’ in some way but
schools are now very sensitive in their administration of the system and
children are not made aware of those receiving free school meals.
Schools are also not given any personal details about income /personal
circumstances,’ she said.
